St. Mark’s Leadership
Meet our church leadership team:
the people who help coordinate and oversee the mission, ministry and worship of St. Mark’s.
Staff
The Rev. Les Roberts, OSF
Deacon
The Rev. Les Roberts was ordained to the sacred order of deacons on June 4, 2022 upon completion of the the Diocese of Maryland’s Deacon Formation Program. Deacon Les’ sending church is Trinity Episcopal Church in Elkridge, Maryland, and he has been assigned to St. Mark’s on the Hill to serve as its Deacon beginning September 4, 2022.
In addition to being a Deacon, he is a Life Professed friar (brother) in the Order of Saint Francis (OSF), and serves as its Secretary General. The Order of St. Francis (OSF) is a religious community that is a brotherhood of like-minded men who follow the example of St. Francis of Assisi; living a disciplined life serving God apostolically, and living out their call in the world. The friars live in different parts of the world, with their own individual ministries based on the needs of their local community and parish. In the OSF, friars profess three vows: Chastity, Obedience, and Poverty as defined by their Rule of Life.
Deacon Les’ passion is in performing jail and prison aftercare ministries. He is the Executive Director of the Baltimore Area Aftercare Program (BAAP), a non-profit organization that has two programs. The first is Project Makeover, an emergency needs program for assistance in obtaining food, clothes, shelter, etc… for newly released returning citizens. The second program, the Partner for Success program, provides a faith-based mentoring program designed for returning citizens to help them return as a successful member of the community, and break the cycle of returning back to jail/prison.
Deacon Les lives in Lutherville, Timonium, Maryland with his wife, Jennifer, of 31 years. He works for Peraton Corp as a senior program manager in Woodlawn, Maryland. He and Jennifer have two adult children, Carrie and Erin, who both live in Towson, Maryland.
Mary Hamlin-Spencer
Organist and Director of Music
Mary joined the St. Mark’s staff in late 2021 and is delighted to be serving as St. Mark’s Organist and Music Director.
She grew up in Scarsdale, New York, where she began her keyboard studies and sang in the Junior Choir with Robert N. Roth, organist and choirmaster at her home parish of St. James the Less Episcopal Church. She credits Bob as her inspiration to become a church musician.
She attended Westminster Choir College and Muhlenberg College, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and English literature, graduating magna cum laude. Upon completion of her undergraduate degree, Mary spent a year in Paris, France studying organ privately with the renowned blind concert organist André Marchal.
Upon returning to the United States, Mary accepted a position as Music Minister at Ascension Lutheran Church in Towson, Maryland, a post she held for over 14 years. While there she completed her Masters of Music degree at Towson University in organ performance. Subsequently she was the Organist and Choirmaster at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Ten Hills, Baltimore for eight years.
In 2001 she and her family moved to Exeter, New Hampshire, where she served as Music Minister at Christ Episcopal Church for six years. While at Christ Church she helped facilitate a new organ project, which led to the purchase and installation of the three manual, 45 rank Lively-Fulcher pipe organ in September 2006.
After returning to Baltimore in 2007, Mary served as Music Director at Epiphany Episcopal Church for twelve years and most recently as Music Director at Govans Presbyterian Church from 2020-2021 before joining St. Mark’s on the Hill in 2021. She also holds the position of adjunct instructor in organ at Goucher College.
In 2012 Mary became a board-certified teacher of the Alexander Technique after completing a three year, 1600 hour training course. She very much enjoys combining her Alexander teaching practice with her work as a musician.
Mary is active in both the Association of Anglican Musicians and the American Guild of Organists, and has served as an officer and executive board member in both organizations.
The Bishop’s Ministry Team
The Bishop’s Ministry Team (we like to call it the “BMT”) is the equivalent of the Vestry, Council or Board. Since St. Mark’s is a mission status parish, the Rector and the BMT handle the affairs of the parish on behalf of, and in consultation with the Bishops and Diocesan Staff. Currently serving on St. Mark’s BMT are:
The Rt. Rev. Eugene Taylor Sutton, Bishop Diocesan
The Rt. Rev. Carrie Schofield-Broadbent, Bishop Coadjutor
The Episcopal Diocese of Maryland
